ABSTRACT

Moringa Oleifera has so many nutrients, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial activities and other valuable ingredients. It's used to treat chronic illnesses since ancient period in Sri Lanka. Here the study is to find out the effectiveness of M.Oleifere supplements in treating the patients with Bronchial Asthma. Furthermore, the effect of it with regards to the symptoms of Bronchial Asthma and to the lung function is evaluated.

Background

Moringa usually called as a miracle tree in South Asian region, including Sri Lanka. Scientific name for this is Moringa Oleifere. It is a tree which is rich of antioxidants and more nutrients. Every part of the tree contains various minerals and other components such as proteins, vitamins, beta-carotene, amino acids and various phenolic substances.

In Sri Lanka has been using over more than 3500 years as an Ayurvedic medicine and as well as a food source.  The leaves of Moringa Oleiferea tree is containing all essential Plant metabolites such as: amino acids, carotenoids, polypetanoids, phenicilic acid, flavonoids, alkaloids, glucosidates and isolthiocynoids etc. So, the leaves with this rich antioxidants and other nutrients has been used to treat many chronic illnesses and nutrition deficiencies. Also it has anti-inflammatory, antioxidants, anti-cholesterol effects which are effective in treating chronic diseases. Because of these factors, the Moringa powder supplements which are made up of 100% pure Moringa Oliefera is quite popular among the people in Sri Lanka.

Accordingly, it can be analyzed bronchial asthma as follows: Bronchial asthma is an airway chronic inflammatory pathology which is characterized by reversible obstruction in various degrees which has range of symptoms such as Dyspenea, wheezing, chest tightness and cough.

In this case study it will evaluate the effectiveness of Moringa supplement in treating bronchial Asthma. Here the changes in symptoms of BA and in the lung function is assessed by using the Spirometer test.

Materials and Methods

Supplements of M.Oleifere were purchased from the local market and supplements were tested for its contents.

Clinical study was carried out on patients (20-70 Years) of either sex, who is suffering from mild to moderate bronchial asthma, who are visiting OPD of a Private hospital in Sri Lanka. Informed written consent was obtained from all patients who enrolled in this clinical trial.

Patients who were participating in the study had symptoms of bronchial Asthma Such as: dyspnea, wheezing, chest tightness and cough. We excluded the patients who had severe bronchial asthma (Forced Expiratory volume-[FEV], <20%), Pulmonary TB after confirming from chest x-ray. Other CVS pathologies and pregnancies.

Respiratory functions were measured using the spirometer, before and after the three weeks treatment with Moringa supplements.

Parameters which were assessed before and after the treatment:

FVC-Fixed Vital Capacity

FEV1-Fixed Expiratory volume in 1 s

While patients were on treatment in every week, patients were asked to come to the clinic and observed for side effects, deteriorations, and improvements etc.

Symptoms of BA was Assessed by a score as follows:

Absence of symptoms-0

Mild symptoms-1

Moderate symptoms-2

Severe symptoms-3

Then calculated the baseline mean volume for each symptom identified before and after treatments.

Results

In the table 1, there are baseline characteristic like: age, weights, height, BP, PR.

25% of patients had allergic type (extrinsic) of asthma

75% of patients had non allergic type (intrinsic) of asthma

Baseline characteristics of patient:

-Age (years) - 20-70

-Gender- Male-18 |   Female -12

-Height (cm)-145cm-180cm

-Weight (kg)-30 kg-70kg

-Asthma duration- 1-15 years

-BP (Systolic- mmhg) - 100-150

      (Diastolic -mmhg)-65-105

There is a significant reduce in symptom score which was mentioned earlier after treatments with Moringa supplements.

Conclusion

The results of the study shows that Moringa Oleifera helps to reduce the severity if symptoms of Asthma and significant improvement in parameters of the lung function test. In here the all four symptoms which assessed which includes: Dyspnea, wheezing, chest tightness and cough were remarkably reduced with the treatments using Moringa Oleifera supplements.

In addition to that, in here FVC and FEV1 also assessed. FVC is a useful value to evaluate lung functioning while FEV1 is measured to assess the airflow of lungs and severity of asthma. After the treatments with Moringa Oleifera supplements, FVC and FEV1 improved significantly. It indicates the improvement of lung function and reduction of severity of asthma. Particularly, in this study, no adverse effects were identified, which is another significant result as well.
